Heart shaped box goodreads7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() When his girlfriend, whose real name is Mary Beth but he calls Georgia to remind her of where she comes from, sees the ghost as well, she insists they get rid of the suit. For whatever reason Jude knows that he cannot look into the ghost’s eyes or he’ll see something horrible.ĭays go by and more and more strange occurrences happen. Sure enough, on its first night in the house, Jude sees an old man sitting in a chair in his hallway, head down, swinging a pendulum in the shape of a small blade. Certainly not as creepy as Jude was originally hoping for, he stows the suit away out of sight and waits to see what happens with this supposed “ghost”. What arrives is a black, heart-shaped box with a man’s suit in it. So when his personal assistant tells him he found a ghost for sale online for a cool thousand, Jude doesn’t even think twice about scooping it up. Aging rockstar Judas Coyne, aka Jude, has a massive collection of some of the most fucked-up curios one could ever want to own, up to and including a genuine snuff film, the impetus for his wife leaving him years earlier. Though the basic premise seems a bit odd, the way it all unfolds makes a lot of sense. Original, touching and terrifying all at the same time, this is the kind of book that most authors work their whole lives to churn out. Thank God I did, too, because Heart-Shaped Box is truly a kick ass novel. ![]()

The signature of all things review7/6/2023 ![]() In contrast, EPL is a short book about a short period in Gilbert’s life but feels like saga – so bogged down in boring detail I would’ve rather put sharp sticks in my eyes than keep reading. Signature is a saga, but has pace – it spans decades and continents but Gilbert moves the story along at a decent clip and it kept me reading well into the night. It’s been reviewed a gazillion times on Goodreads – there’s nothing that I can add, short of saying why it was a very different reading experience from that of Eat, Pray, Love. It’s on the very short list of books I could not finish – abandoned midway through the ‘Pray’ section because I couldn’t bear to read another whiny, sniveling word.Īnd then I read The Signature of All Things. ![]() And that Elizabeth Gilbert must be incredibly self-absorbed to have penned it. Excuse me while I cut myself a very, very large slice of humble pie.īecause I have never been backward in saying how much I loathed Eat, Pray, Love. ![]()

A wholly original story, Unblemished begins as a sweet melody and quickly becomes an anthem of the heart. Just when I thought I’d figured each out, Sara Ella sent me for another ride. “A breathtaking fantasy set in an extraordinary fairy-tale world, with deceptive twists and an addictively adorable cast who are illusory to the end. ![]()

![]() The modern section covers books that have been published in the past few years - about 2018 onwards. I divided the list by classic and modern murder mysteries. One final disclaimer before we get into it. ![]() So which are the best ones? My aim with this list is to provide 25 of the best murder mystery books you can read! Of course this list will by no means be exhaustive. There are so many murder mysteries in literature. From the beloved and classic Agatha Christie to the more modern mysteries. It’s just plain fun.Īs I mentioned, there are endless murder mysteries out there. But, along with the different types of plots in murder mysteries, the combinations are endless! And there’s something so satisfying about uncovering who the killer is. Sure, the genre has some key elements such as a murder, a suspect, and a detective figure. ![]() Plus, there is such a wide variety of murder mysteries that you can read thousands of these books and find no formulaic answer for who the killer is. The best murder mystery books are such a joy to read because they let us readers play detective from the comfort of our homes. ![]()

What Is Life? by Paul Nurse7/5/2023 ![]() To survive the challenges that face us all today - climate change, pandemic, loss of biodiversity and food security - it is vital that we all understand what life is. ![]() Nurse writes with delight at life's richness and with a sense of the urgent role of biology in our time. He introduces the scientists who made the most important advances, and, using his personal experiences in and out of the lab, he shares with us the challenges, the lucky breaks, and the thrilling eureka moments of discovery. If you have limited biology, then have Google close at hand to understand some of the more complex issues aro What a wonderful book, and as close as I have read to an understanding of what life is and where it comes from. ![]() It is a shared journey of discovery step-by-step Nurse illuminates five great ideas that underpin biology - the Cell, the Gene, Evolution by Natural Selection, Life as Chemistry, and Life as Information. ![]() The ship leaves Nantucket on Christmas Day. Despite fears of Ahab-and the harsh-sounding prophecies of a man named Elijah, who warns Ishmael and Queequeg of the captain-the two men decide to ship out on the Pequod. Ishmael later finds out that Ahab lost his leg to a particularly nasty whale, who bit it off this whale is called Moby Dick, and is famous for its whiteness, its ferocity, and its inability to be caught. ![]() ![]() There, Ishmael comes across a ship called the Pequod, and when he speaks to two of the boats owners, Peleg and Bildad, he realizes that the captain of the Pequod, called Ahab, is a “strange” man, possibly mad, who does not tend to associate with others. Although Ishmael is initially scared of Queequeg, the two quickly become friends, and vow to accompany each other on a ship of Ishmael’s choosing, in Nantucket. In New Bedford, at the Spouter Inn, Ishmael meets Queequeg, a “native” man from Kokovoko, in the Pacific isles, who is trained as a harpooner on whale-ships-a man who actually hunts and catches whales. Wonder woman rucka7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() He had years worth of plans, plot points to address, messes to fix, and character arcs to complete, but none of that mattered, as he had been told he was done. Greg Rucka had been fired off Wonder Woman at this point. So for all intents and purposes, this one’s the big ending. The issue after needn’t even be a WW issue, but a separate one-shot, as it’s merely a lead into the event Infinite Crisis (which we’ll touch on a bit more). But while the latter operates as a stand-alone one-shot spanning Diana’s history and relationship with Superman, this is the actual ending. #225 isn’t, obviously, the final issue of the volume, #226 is – and that, too, is written by Greg Rucka. It’s the numerous flaws and obvious failings and it’s all the things wrong, messy, and incomplete within the work. But now, looking back on it, and revisiting it, what fascinates me endlessly about it isn’t the supposed ‘perfections’, not the great big successes. When I first read it as a new reader, though, I certainly believed it was. ![]() ![]() And it’s also the run to finally cap off and end the long WW volume that began way back in the ‘80s under the stewardship of the legendary George Perez. He wasn’t blessed with artistic collaborators who were there from the start to the end, so there’s plenty of people coming in and leaving, and artistic inconsistency is baked in. Beginnings tell us who we want to be but endings tell us who we were, and there’s few endings finer than this one, wherein Greg Rucka bids farewell to Wonder Woman. ![]() |
