![]() ![]() The volume uncovers voices from the Black community that embraced the doctrinal tenets of the movement and, in many cases, explicitly self-identified as fundamentalists. But did this major religious perspective really stop cold in its tracks at the color line?īlack Fundamentalists: Conservative Christianity and Racial Identity in the Segregation Era(NYU Press, 2021) challenges the idea that fundamentalism was an exclusively white phenomenon. To this day, the word “fundamentalist” often conjures the image of a fire-breathing preacher―strident, unyielding in conviction. ![]() As the modernist-fundamentalist controversy came to a head in the early twentieth century, an image of the “fighting fundamentalist” was imprinted on the American cultural consciousness. ![]()

Devil's Brood by Sharon Kay Penman7/8/2023 ![]() Curiously, it is a novel without villains - only flawed human beings caught up in misperceptions and bad judgment calls. Sharon Kay Penman has created a novel of tremendous power, as two strong-willed, passionate people clash, a family divides, and a marriage ends in all but name. But it is also the story of a great king whose brilliance forged an empire but whose personal blind spots led him into the most serious mistake of his life. This is a story of betrayal as Henry's three eldest sons and his wife enter into a rebellion against him, aligning themselves with his bitterest enemy, King Louis of France. And because it is a royal family whose domains span the English Channel and whose alliances encompass the Christian world, that collapse will have dire consequences. Where the second novel in the trilogy, Time And Chance, dealt with the extraordinary politics of the twelfth century, climaxing with the murder of Thomas Becket and Henry's confrontation with the Church and self-imposed exile to Ireland, Devil's Brood centers on the implosion of a family. ![]() ![]() ![]() The long-awaited and highly anticipated final volume in Penmans trilogy of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitainea tumultuous conclusion to this timeless story of love, power, ambition, and betrayal. ![]()

The 3 mistakes of my life book7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() There is a detour to Australia presented in the story. ![]() This book is about the life of three friends based in Ahmedabad. After reading this book, there was a feeling that the writer is quite confused in terms of conveying his true feelings. The writing techniques, the themes that were used in the book and the masala were the same in this book as well, whereas, this particular book was full of stereotypes unlike the other two books of Bhagat. The book was not much different from his two other books. But miracles happen once- and 3 mistakes- is not at all a miracles- it is the shadow of the author’s previous books. And we are presented with books like Anything For You Madam, Above Average and many more. That is the reason why publishers are coming up with so many campus books. That is why everyone from the IITs and IIMs dotted across the country is grabbing their note pad and writing out their story. That’s the whole story about Chetan’s world- you hate it you like it- you are bound to love it. Whenever I pick up a Chetan bhagat book- I am sure of two things- I am going back to my college days, I and living through those array of slangs, breathing in the worldly air and slowly giving myself up to the challenges, trials and failures of life- finally being rescued by the strong power of love and relationship. ![]()

Kara Walker by Robert F. Reid-Pharr7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() They seemingly prod their way into existence from a state of individual and collective slumber. Walker creates forms that maximize what the viewer brings to them. Controversy that, I contend, is only partly a response to her iconography and more to her medium of choice: life-size black cut-paper figures glued onto the gallery walls. ![]() ![]() They have been the target of considerable controversy for the perceived obscenity of her imagery and the alleged revival of deep-seated racial stereotypes. Kara Walker’s installations have garnered international attention since the early 1990s for deploying an archaic representational form of portraiture-the cutout silhouette. ![]()

![]() The story is compelling, and the writing style is definitely engaging. Plus even though I’m not a huge fan of poetry, I can appreciate it, but the continual references to Walt Whitman and his works come across as a little ostentatious, and I had a hard time believing its effects on the main characters. ![]() ![]() There was no relevance to the characters, their motivation, or the environment to carry this out. But I wasn’t sold on the delivery… letter writing is fine, but there was something about the style of the writing how many of the letters were repeated snippets of conversation, or moments spent together for no other reason than to inform the reader. The events that happen are truly shocking and really pack a punch to my heart. ![]()

Nightwing, Volume 1 by Kyle Higgins7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Nightwing is walking through a destroyed Metropolis surrounded by unconscious superheroes. The comic starts out twelve years in the past. It feels fresh, has a very unique setting, and is filled with so much mystery that I cannot wait to read more of it. Now that it is out, Nightwing: The New Order has proven to be all of this and more. ![]() Plus it was going to be written by New 52 Nightwing scribe Kyle Higgins, who’s work on the character we enjoyed. It was an interesting concept that seemed to borrow from the best parts of House of M and Superman: Red Son while still being its own comic. When it was first announced, I thought that Nightwing: The New Order sounded like a great idea. DC Comics fans are in for a wild ride with this one. Plus, it is written in a way that will hook you in from the start and leave you wanting more by the end. It is not your typical dystopian future with maniacal tyrants, instead it is more down to earth and realistic. ![]() Overall: This is an extremely interesting concept wrapped around an enjoyable story. Nightwing proves to be a fantastic lead for the book.Ĭons: Fans upset about Nightwing’s role in this series do not yet receive an explanation. The world this story is set in is a beat of its own and is very fun to learn about. ![]() Pros: The main storyline is great and ends with a fantastic twist. ![]()

Kite runner and the mountains echoed7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() The book blurb's own synopsis may look as though he concentrates on Abdullah and Pari but their tale only bookends the story. ![]() Now, for novel number 3, he does something different. ![]() These people are Afghans and this is their story.īest-selling author, human rights activist and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Khaled Hosseini gave us the Afghan male experience in The Kite Runner and the female experience in A Thousand Splendid Suns, each book following two specific people (although a different pair each time) right the way through. It's also a nation of great pain and turmoil. They're all very different people, born of a nation of great natural beauty, natural wealth and the cradle of civilisation. Then there are 10 year old Abdullah and his little sister Pari inseparable till something separates them, causing a rift that will haunt them both in some way for the rest of their lives. Nabi is the servant of a wealthy man but carries the secret of a deed he regrets and a love that can't be acknowledged.
