Once Stolen by D.N. Bryn7/3/2023 ![]() ![]() But Cacao is not the only one held accountable the people responsible for his trauma are also responsible for the pain that trauma passes on. ![]() He is still in control of his harmful actions and held accountable for the damage his coping mechanisms have done, including the damage they’ve have done to himself, because these coping mechanisms hurt him first and foremost. I wanted to write a flawed, autistic character who’s flaws weren’t completely separate from their autism (real life is messy and interconnected our ND traits often can’t be easily separated from the rest of who we are), but I also wanted to make it clear that this character’s autism in and of itself in no way makes them a better or worse (more harmful or less harmful) person then anyone else.Ĭacao’s flaws (selfishness, cynicism, bitterness) develop as a coping mechanism due to growing up with neurotypical people who refused to accept that he had different needs from themselves-people who treated him with bitterness and selfishness. ![]() Minor spoilers for Cacao’s backstory ahead!Ī (far to large) number of autistic characters fall into harmful stereotypes in which their autism is portrayed as undesirable or harmful, commonly in ways that the character themselves has little control over. There’s only a week and a half until Once Stolen comes out, so I wanted to share about Cacao’s autism in relation to his less likable/more harmful attributes. ![]()

Review of black cake7/2/2023 ![]() I appreciated the flow of locations in the timeline of the story. Food is a pivotal blessing in the book. Their upbringing is a testament to the life their parents provided them, especially the tribulations their mother faced.įamilies carry the reader to places including London, California, and the Caribbean. Benny is a young person who is understanding her sexuality, which drove her to leave home in the first place. His thoughts are an internal monologue, a dramatic irony. Byron is grappling with being a Black man in his work in Ocean Science. There is an awkwardness between Byron, the older sibling, and his sister, Benny. In the prose, you also learn enough about the characters to not question what you read but not long to know more.Ĭhosen family is a frame in the novel, particularly for Benny. You learn just enough about the characters amidst the story in breaths. Most of the chapters were no more than five pages. ![]() They learn about the intricacies of their mother’s life as they grieve. ![]() ![]() Byron and Benny inherit a black cake that entails their mother’s ingredients of survival, love, and independence. Benny has been estranged from the family for years. In Black Cake, siblings Byron and Benny meet to receive an inheritance after their mother, Eleanor, died. Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson reminded me of Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty yet is incredibly unique, emotional, and gripping. ![]()

On the prowl briggs7/2/2023 ![]() She’s sure that her alpha is responsible. She sees a young man turned, caged and then found dead. Anna is “afraid of her own shadow” and has been made into this mouse of a woman by the abuse inflicted by her pack. ![]() ![]() Initially, she was passed around the pack until the alpha’s mate stepped in to put a stop to it. She believes she is a submissive werewolf because of the way she was treated. Anna is a young werewolf whose existence as a shiftling has been full of abuse. Briggs: Your contribution, “Alpha and Omega”, was the best part of the anthology largely due to your strong voice, however good prose was not enough to cover the relationship flaws. This is an area which is not well populated so I like the concept and hope for better execution in the future. In On the Prowl, four authors try to jump the bridge from fantasy to romance with varying degrees of success. Peter thiel book zero to one7/2/2023 ![]() ![]() Both of those books are dedicated to the same idea Peter imparts in this book: enormous value can be created when a business creates something fresh and new. The main theme of this book reminded us a lot of the Blue Ocean Strategy and The Science of Getting Rich. ![]() Peter is a powerful thinker and some of the ideas expressed in this book demonstrate his ability to see things from the inverse perspective. For anyone trying to start their own business and explore new ways to create a product or service, this book will give you plenty to think about. This was a fantastic book for entrepreneurs. PRESTON AND STIG’S GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THE BOOK Peter was providing lectures to students at Stanford University and one of the students, Blake Masters, turned his notes into this book: Zero to One. Appleseed, Vol. 1 by Masamune Shirow7/1/2023 ![]() "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title. This is essential reading for anyone interested in science fiction. From here the central thematic conflict of the series is established: the human race's two options of (1) pursuing their every desire, thereby dragging their whole world into destruction, or (2) changing their very nature to preserve the present sterile utopia forever. But once the stage is set and the pieces are in place, an action scene erupts that carries through the rest of the book. This book moves at a leisurely pace as we are introduced to the characters and their new home on the island of Olympus. Into this new utopia come Deunan Knute, a nomad street-smart soldier, and her cyborg partner, Briareos. 1: The Promethean Challenge, Appleseed: Prometheus Unbound (Appleseed, 2), Appleseed: The Scales of Prometheus (Appleseed, 3), Applese. Wait and see wendy pope pdf7/1/2023 ![]() We will obtain informed consent from each participant or their guardian. Children aged 2 − 16 years with AOM who are considered at low risk for complications will be recruited from six participating urban primary health care services across Australia. ![]() This non-inferiority multi-centre randomised controlled trial will determine whether watchful waiting is non-inferior to immediate antibiotics for urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children with AOM without perforation. ![]() Urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are at lower risk of complications, but evidence to support the subsequent recommendation for watchful waiting in this population is lacking. The high prevalence of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities leads these children to be classified as high risk. Treatment guidelines recommend watchful waiting for children older than 2 years with acute otitis media (AOM) without perforation, unless they are at high risk of complications. ![]()

Rainbow rowell eleanor and park7/1/2023 ![]() it felt better than anything had ever hurt.' 'It felt so good that it crowded out all the bad things. Here are some of the most poignant lines. Eleanor, however, will be okay.she's a strong girl. Mother of the Year, she is not, nor will she ever be. I cannot fathom treating your children - or allowing your children to be treated - the way this mother did. They were beneath any care or consideration. ![]() ![]() The author made me absolutely despise the situation Eleanor found herself in, and in addition to hating the situation, I despised her mother and "step-father". There are lines so beautifully written in this book that they made me want to cry (and I'm not a book crier.I'll cry over commercials and movies, but not books). ![]() I absolutely LOVED every single second of this book - I loved the writing style, Eleanor and Park, Park's parents, Eleanor's "friends", even Tina and Steve, by the end. ![]() |
